A Garden Blog

Welcome to a garden blog by Maddy and maybe soon more folks that are related to me. My idea is to have a family blog about our gardens so that we can share in the fun of growing food from scratch, trade tips and stories, and possible trade food. Please join my blog!!! It will be fun and easy.

  1. Hey petermaddy
Are you still plauged by slugs?
I have recently taken down all the rainwater guttering from our shed to creosote and left the gutters open side down on the grass overnight. The next day there were dozens of slugs hiding there in the coolddamp space created. Obviously I killed them all slowly and painfully but if you did something like this you could always set them free in the park instead!
I also remeber many years ago using saucers of beer in the garden overnight but they do drown that way.

  2. No, the plague is mostly over - about a week of nightly slaughterings took care of that. I just smushed them with a trowel, it seemed the quickest, most humane way to do it. We also did beer traps for a couple of nights, but preferred to drink the beer and smush the slugs. I read that the slugs don't drown - they would take a long time to drown because they absorb oxygen through their evermoist skin - instead they are dessicated by the alcohol.
